——After reading the Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, who was one of the most important representatives of the “Jazz Age”, in
American history, maybe it “was the best of times, it was the worst of times, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way”.
As the title says: the great Gatsby, but why is Gatsby great? In my point of view, there are two reasons:
Firstly, Gatsby was born in a very poor family, but he get a lot of wealth rely on his own efforts, which is different from Daisy’s husband, Tom, who was born in a rich high class and don’t need to worry about earning money. The second one is that when Gatsby decide to earn a lot of money, the reason was simple. He just want to get Daisy’s love again. The main reason why Daisy marry Tom but not Gatsby is that Gatsby was just a poor young man which didn’t suits Daisy’s statue. Later, the big house right opposite Daisy’s, those big parties, they are all be made to attract Daisy’s attention. So just for love, this simple reason ,Gatsby changed into an upper class’s rich people.
The author spend a lot of time to describe the wealthy and
extravagant life of those people. Irrespective of which class they belong to, all of them worships money, they also believe that money will make
life better. Daisy and Tom belongs to the high class, money completely assimilated of the upstart but extreme exclusion and despised. Gatsby don't understand this truth, his inflexible pursuit of wealth, thinks that he can regain the ideal embodiment of Daisy, even if he got the material met, he still cannot escape spiritual loneliness and sorrow.
Gatsby's dream is typical of the American Dream. His struggle reflects the Americans respect of tough, independent, and upward spirit. His failure declared the postwar American spirit of decadence and decline. Material civilization height prosperity bring people's
hearts deserted and distortion, the hidden appearance enjoy carnival huge spiritual emptiness and confusion, pain of the whole social spiritual loss, but no way out.
