A review of The Great Gatsby

I don ‟t know how many people start reading The Great Gatsby because of Murakami Haruki. Hesaid that TheGreat Gatsby was a fantastic fiction so that I immediately developed a strong interest in it.I read The Great Gatsby several years ago when I was graduated from senior high school. Actually I was reading it for fun, because I heard that one of my favorite actors --- Leonardo DiCaprio acted in this film.

The novel is told us the story of Gatsby by Nick‟s tone. Nick came to New York from his hometown the America Middle West, and he rent a small house nearby Gatsby‟s luxurious mansion where hold a grand banquet every night. The story began with the meet between Nick and Gatsby. He is both the authorities and the spectator. This is a story about Gatsby and his pursuit for the „American dreams‟. During the World War One, the poor soldier Gatsby fell in love with an upper class girl named Daisy. But due to the different between them, Daisy decided to marry Tom, a man of her class, instead of Gatsby. He strived for five years to become a millionaire and bought a villa near Daisy‟s to attract her. Eventually, he was killed because of her crime. After reading it, something reverberates in my heart. I can‟thelp thinking of the theme Fitzgerald trying to convey.

In my personal opinion, death may be a perfect way for Gatsby to relieve. The pure girl daisy was his entire dream. Butdaisy is a foolish, selfish girl. All the dreams are broken. There was nothing he could live with. And his future life would be boring and make no sense, because he had no dream, no goal. His death is the best way to get rid of all the sufferings.

The cause of this tragedy is daisy. But as a matter of fact, it is not just Daisy‟ fault.Mostly, the blame is American society. We can see daisy like wealthylifeand

married to Tom, but may be most of the people will do this, because most of the people hate poverty and like rich life. Nick had invited some people to come to Gatsby‟s funeral. These people were all Gatsby‟s so-called friends. They found a lot of excuses for their absence because they knew that Gatsby was no longer useful for them. Gatsby‟s generous parties had not brought him even one friend. What‟s more,

Daisy, once Gatsby‟s lover, the real killer, “hadn‟t sent a message or a flower”.It is the society cause the tragedy. In that society, the people are all selfish. Another problem the author want to describe is that the people have no relief and no dream, and they lead a life in vanity Even Gatsby, such an ambitious man, excepting the love of daisy, has no other dream. He has a luxurious house, lives a rich life, and attends all kinds of party, but he doesn‟t know what he really wants except daisy. It is a pity for him because once he found daisy can‟t return back, he will no place to go.

It ‟s appropriate of Nick to tell this story. I think theyare the same kind of people in a sense. In nick‟s heart, Gatsby is always a great man no matter the man which held many parties or the man died nobody.Nick witnessed the virtual mood of human reality. At the end, Nick backed to his hometown with a tragedy mood. Shutting the book,I am deep in thought. The author tries to describe the social, the so-called up class ,the so-called prosperous country, and certainly the shattered"the American dream".In my opinion, the author not only wants to attack the luxury and hypocrisy of the classes, but also to appeal to people to pursue true love, not the greed of money and hypocrisy, although this book has a desperate ending.

The Great Gatsby is written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, who was born in1896 and died in Hollywood in 1940, and grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota. He is the most important representative of the “Jazz Age”. He first published The Great Gatsby on April 10, 1925, a story set in Island‟s North Shore and New York City during the summer of 1922.

After reading the novel, I was deeply shocked by Gatsby‟sdream, and his miserable ending, and impressed more about the “Jazz Age”.In American history, maybe“ it was the best of times, it was the worst of times, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way”.A hopeless ending indicates that the most beautiful dream in that age was eventually destroyed by the reality, the social. As far as I am concerned, this story can serve as a reminder for us. To live a meaningful life, we should carefully choose some dreams to pursue. And in the process of fulfilling our dreams, weshould always be clearly about what we really desire. Anyhow, only by pursuing the proper

dreams can we finally get to the deep springs of happiness.
